I want to tell you on how we used to hunt for wild animals.

Efwe khurakikha khwefwe nekhuaya chisang’i, bele khale eeh khwarumikhilanga chinyenyi chefwe chabechanga bele che mundaa khulondekhana nendekhuli nende bele ekhisi, khuli nende bali kicheu khuli nende bali emuna, khuli nende bali enduyu, khuli nende ekherekeke, khuli nende esindu, khuli nende likhanga.

The beginning of us hunting long ago, our vegetables used to be from the bush, the animals include the antelope, a squirrel, rabbit and porcupine, we have other animals like the guinea fowl.

When these animals were somewhere, we used to go along way and meet, we knew the sides the dogs were at.

We would know the dogs had arrived, if we wanted to get these things we would get them at Mwanja's place or in the cave at Sang'alo, when we come to plan a day.

We would come and request that they prepare big ugali wrapped in banana leaves.

It will be put on banana leaf, they make some stew using simsim and we would tie all of it together in a banana leaf, we would come from the mountains carrying the mixture like them and then meet with the dogs.

When we met these dogs, we would take time to learn the dogs names.

When we were done with the names, we would identify which dog was good at sensing smell, the one which could run fast and one to follow our footsteps.

Because we would meet different things in the bush so we needed a dog that would be at our footsteps.

We would have surveyed the place and known about the antelope, it would have rained so we would go and follow up on the footsteps during the day.

We would follow up in the footsteps and we would go very far.

We go far even to Kakamega, provided the footsteps would lead us until where it would be resting.

We used to know when an antelope reduces the movement, it meant it was reaching its resting point.

It would reach a point and jump, you would see them from a distance, when it jumps that is when you would realize it was in the area, it will be confusing you for it to go and rest.

When that was done, we would tell someone to stand where we would be sure that where the footsteps passed by, we would stop the dog to go through.

That was where he would stand with the dog, the strong one which could run, then we would surround the place.

We would then surround the place and let one person go in with the smelling dogs.

You would see when this antelope wakes up, it will look for a way it left from, it does not just leave and run to a place it does not know, it will go back using the same route and therefore going through the same footsteps.

We would follow it using the same footsteps.

When we would be done with that, we would be getting close to the antelope, the footsteps would disappear and we would put people with dogs there because we knew from there it would have come back to us.

When we follow the antelope and surround it, we would wait and see what happens.

When the antelope get out from the bush, it would meet with these dogs.

The first dog which will see the antelope will not leave it, then we would take a traditional bell and tie it in the fast running dog's neck and we would have a dog that followed it and which would start crying, when they would make eye contact, its work would be just to cry.

We used to depend on the two dogs, the fast runner, the one with the bell and the crying one was what we depended on.

The antelope would hide but then we would be able to see the footsteps.

We would determine its presence by observing the footsteps and assume it would still follow the same footsteps, the head faces where it came from while a sleep, the behind faces the other side and that is how it leaves when it wakes up.

When it will be leaving, the person who does not miss, who we believe in, you would hear him say, "I, the son of Nasenya, has finished it"

As we stood on the antelope, we would find out where the person who killed it came from.

That would be the first thing, then know who killed it and brags about it comes from which area, Khalaba or Kitinda.

If we would find out that this person came from Kitinda area, we would just skin the antelope and while all the intestines will be put aside.

We give them to the dogs which would have worked.

We split the antelope in the middle, we would take the larger part and give to the person who killed it, one from the other area, we would give the small part to the person from the other area who didn't kill it.

Now it was him who would share that part.

We agree and stand there as it will be shared. "Look, its me who killed and I come from this area, my people are here and your people are there, so you will take the middle part, this one to take the part which follows and so on."

They would share basing on the parts. The behind, the hip etc. then they would do that until they finish with every person.

And when we leave, we would know the people we have are enough for the antelope to be shared with, we don't take one hundred people when we go to hunt, we would count if we would be four or eight people.

We would know how to share amongst the four people.
