I am Nikasio, the son of Waiti, a grandchild from the Baengele clan, I am here with a story about our Bukusu tales.

Omusale akhilanga omulebe.

A friend is better than a relative.

Naye sisiakhaya omulebe sili bubolo.

What a relative cannot do, it is rotten.

Babolanga bario khubela niyo webulwa naye alimo nende bulayi khukhila omusale.

They say that because whoever you were born with, he/she has more value than a friend.

Bukusus said this one because the road starts from your door and maybe heading to your sibling, maybe you are going to visit a relative, the road will not tell you what is ahead.

Sikila babola bario, sonyala wamanya sili ebweni woo tawe.

The reason they said that is because you can never know what is ahead of you.

Ocha busa nengila khane ebweni kamaya kalio, namwe engila endemu ekhulumile khungila, namwe wangale chirupia namwe onyole bulayi.

You will be walking not knowing maybe there will be a fight, a snake might bite you, you may find some money or find good things.

Nono sekhubolela ta, ewe ocha busa.

The road doesn't tell you anything, you just use it.

Upa sa kumoyo leba newe ocha.

You just have some confidence and leave.

Nono engila sekhubolela kacha khukholekha ebweni namwe niko ocha khunyolayo tawe.

So the road doesn't tell you what will happen or what you will find ahead.

Nio baandika bali engila sebolela okenda tawe.

That is why they said, the road doesn't tell whoever uses it.

Ne barakho lundi bali embalu seria mujuaji ta, omuchuati ta.

Another saying goes this way, circumcision doesn't fear a know-it-all.

Yaani omuchuati babola omundu oli naitiriani oli nende silukuluku mbo anyala kaba ne kumoyo nga kwe simba.

It means a person who feels like he is more strong, who acts strong like he has a heart of a lion.

He will not be knowing the pain that comes with circumcision.

My people as I said, maybe you didn't understand me well.

I said circumcision doesn't respect a big person.

The said here that a person might have a huge body or a broad chest like Amin, who was a Ugandan leader, making you think circumcision will be easy because of how you see your body.

Nekhane burafu buliyo buli bukali khukhilakho nga wamwene webone ne kumubili kwoo.

The pain will be much more than how you see your body.

Ne lundi babola bali embolu niyo iranga.

So they said a calm cow, it is the one that kills.

They said here when one falls, another one replaces, it is similar to the saying Tondo died, Tondo came back.

Like they say whoever didn't see his/her mother in her youth would think their father wasted the cows on her dowry.

Another saying goes this way, "Even the one that grazes where there is more fertile grass still goes back home."

Babolanga bario khubela onyala wacha abundu omwana woo namwe omusoleli namwe omundu acha abundu alayi nio kaya nabona alayi mbo anano sanyala ata ata karusiamo kumunwa ta.

They say that because you, your son or any other person can go to a good grazing spot, he might like the place more than home.

Lakini babola bario khubela sifunane siaba mbo wakhabona biaba bilai olota engo, olota nio wamile.

But they said that meaning whether you find something better you still have to go back home.

Nio baloma bali yakhaba eyaya anefu elotanga.

My Bukusu people, another tale says a bad journey doesn't prevent you from visiting.

Balio basakhulu balio balosi nge ese okhwawaiti oloma oyu papa kabolanga ali ne kakanana ne omundu omusoleli sacha nio abele acha ta.

There are old men, old women and me, the son of Waiti, speaking, my father used to say, when he met a young boy, he wouldn't proceed with the journey.

Lakini bakhale baloma bali lukendo lubi selukhwikayila khukenia ta.

But the ancestors said, a bad journey doesn't prevent you from visiting.

Okorwa babolanga bario khubela bababayo balala bachichanga kakanana ne omundi we sisecha ayukha munju ali, “Ah, lukendo lwabele lubi.”

I don't know why they say that because some who were there used to come back when they met a male person claiming the journey wasn't good.

Ne khane khaba lukendo olwo seluli ne maana ta.

That journey may not be important.

Khane acha nandi achile sa bulayi kanyola nibyo kenyile.

If he would have proceeded he would have found what he wanted to get.

Nio Babukusu baloma bali ah, lukendo lubi selukhwikayila khucha ebukeni ta, ewe ocha busa.

That is why Bukusus said a bad journey doesn't prevent you from visiting.

Nge nomile ndio ndi lukendo lubi selukhwikayila khukenia ta, bifuno bilio bikali lakini khata bilala bilikho ne busiro bulayi bubwene bibola mbo enyange ya kwanja warura khane wakanana lukendo nilwo okhalilanga ta wakanana ne omundu wesisecha namwe wesikhasi wakalukha munju wakona.

As I said that a bad journey doesn't prevent you from visiting, there are so many reasons, but some which are important says that when you meet your wrong travelling side on the first day, maybe you meet a man or a woman and go back to the house to sleep.

Sekali bali bulinyanga nga nono norura lundi oli wakanana okundi okalukhe munju okone tawe.

It doesn't mean you should be going back to the house to sleep when you meet another person.

Onyala wakhola orio khane chinyanga sechifwanana ta.

You can do that but usually the days aren't the same.

Bukusus familiarized that with the one that says, when it rains, it is not that every time it rains, the white termites come out.

My Bukusu people, the reason they said that was if you had some wealth, it was better than the complexion of a person who doesn't like you.
